"I Am Not Religious, but I Witnessed a Miracle"
''My wife has a very complex medical problem. She has one miscarriage after the next,'' confided a wealthy businessman to his young Rav. ''I have three girls, but I would really like to have a boy too.''
This young Rav was the Gaon Rav Moshe Levi, author among other works of the Menuchat Ahava, and one of the Roshei Yeshiva of Yeshivat Kisseh Rachamim in Bnei Brak. The Gaon of the generation, Harav Ovadia Yosef Zatzal, had described him as 'the one who will take over from me after 120.' We unfortunately did not merit this privilege, as the Gaon left us in the prime of his life, in the year 2000, after much suffering. His yartzeit is on the 11th of Cheshvan.
Before his conversation with Rav Moshe, our businessman had lent his car to Rav Chaim Ravi so he could travel and obtain a bracha from Maran, HaGaon, Rav Ovadia Yosef Zatzal. When he was by Maran’s, Rav Ravi asked for a bracha for the owner of the car, which allowed him to make the journey. Maran blessed him and wrote on a piece of paper, 'May you merit to have boys, holy descendants.'
The businessman who was close to Rav Moshe, described his suffering. Rav Moshe encouraged him and told him: 'Tell your wife not to be scared. Everything will be good from now on, and with G-d’s help, may the birth go smoothly and without difficulties.'
The businessman recounts; ''After a while, I announced to the Rav that thank G-d, the difficult period had passed, and we were awaiting the birth. That very day my wife needed to go to a well-known professor in his field for a routine examination. After the Rav's class, he came to me with a large smile and said, 'know that a surprise awaits you.'
Reacting to my surprised expression the Rav explained, 'you will have three boys, on one condition. That you will name them after our holy ancestors, Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov.'
During this conversation my wife called me: 'Come home quickly!' I arrived home, where she greeted me with a huge smile and told me. 'I was at the doctor today, and the test results were good.' She paused for dramatic effect… but I interrupted her, 'And we’re having three boys…'
She looked at me shocked, and then exclaimed disappointed; 'I asked the professor not to tell you anything. I wanted to be the one to tell you. It's really not nice of him.'
I quickly calmed her down by telling her that I had not spoken to the professor. I told her that I had been to Rav Moshe Levi who had revealed to me what he knew. My wife was very moved and declared; 'If the Rav's power is so strong, I will make sure to call the boys as he requested, and from today onwards I will follow all of his recommendations.'
During the pregnancy, there were several frightening moments caused by heavy bleeding, but the Rav was always there to appease us, and throughout the pregnancy promised to us that my wife would have an easy and natural delivery!
When the time came, we arrived at the hospital late at night. The doctors decided not to take any risks, and even though everything appeared normal, since it involved triplets, they wanted to operate. I immediately called Rav Moshe to ask his advice. The Rav told me that it would not be necessary to operate, and the doctors eventually realized themselves that the birth could go well, without a caesarean.
It goes without saying that it was the case!
During the Brit Milah, I offered the honor of being a Sandek to Rav Moshe Levi. At the end of the circumcision, the professor approached the Rav with tears in his eyes, 'I am not religious, but I have to admit. I have witnessed a miracle!'
